Outstanding grouping pertaining to Private August L. Carlson, a native from Bertrand, NE who was killed in action on November 1st, 1918 in France.

Pvt. Carlson served in the Sanitary Detachment of the 309th Machine Gun Battalion. He arrived in France in July 1918 and was fatally wounded by a German shell while he was sleeping in a dugout.

This grouping includes two original photographs. One showing Pvt. Carlson coffin covered with a US flag, with several flower assortments and a portrait of him. The other photograph shows the church where his coffin was placed for the wake.

The grouping also includes the original 48-star flag that was placed on his coffin. It is marked 4 x 6 Style A East color. It was folded in a triangle fold. We did not unfolded the flag completely for the photographs.

Last, this grouping includes the Independent Herald newspaper cover reporting of the funeral of Pvt. Carlson. It is dated from September 23rd, 1921.
Dimensions :
Flag: 4Ft x 6Ft
Photos frame: 14in x 11 3/4in
Actual photo: 9 3/8in x 7 1/4in
Condition :
Both pictures are in great condition.
The flag appears to be in excellent condition though we chose not to completely unfold it in honor of the deceased, so we were not able to check it entirely.
The newspaper is in poor condition. It has been taped, and it is missing a few parts. Copies of it have been made and will be included in the sale.
